Taylor blog post #2
In this post, I'll be focusing on how I would go about marketing some of the project that I am working on as a commercial product.
For my specialization this trimester at SAE (Tri4), I have been focusing my skills on 3D Hard surface modeling. I've been exploring more and more into the realm of 3D Modelling more, though I never really thought about how I would make the skills that I gain in what I study commercial.
From the research online (well mostly from tips from lecturers and some industry friends), I'd market myself on portfolio websites like ArtStation or The Rookies, so that I can have an easily available portfolio ready for when I'm looking for jobs. This would also make it easier for me to market myself to potential employers, as I can send them a direct link to my portfolios.
On top of marketing myself for employed positions, I feel like it is also possible for me to think about selling 3D model assets on libraries/stores like Gumroad or Sketchfab. Marketing and selling 3D assets has a large market online at the moment, as there seems to be large rise in 3D assets demand for use in projects from;
- Creating video games and movies,
- Conducting academic research,
- Planning buildings using architectural visualization,
- Giving 3D tours in the real estate sector.

At the moment, I'm also working on Motion Graphics. With my interdisciplinary work, I'm a part of project that is working on poster campaigns as the motion graphics animator. I love working with motion graphics tools and software, like After Effects, though I haven't had the opportunity to use much of what I know. The opportunity finally came about as I was sort out by student Anne-Kristin, whom I've been working with on her project so far.
While I'm not the project lead, I have thought about how I would go about marketing myself in a similar manner to how I would with my 3D Modelling portfolio, though adding on from portfolio sites such as ArtStation (and here, I forgot that this is technically my portfolio site too XD), I found that there is a lot more showcase for motion graphics on sites like YouTube or Vimeo. A good example of a motion graphics animator that I follow wholeheartedly is Ben Marriott, as their content and skills in motion graphics are phenomenal. In the video I've provided, Ben Marriott even showcases a real of motion graphics artist that he considers the best, so I find that there is a sort of social connection through the use of video platforms such as YouTube.
Like 3D modelling, there is also a few library sites for motion graphics assets like for example Envato. I stumbled across Envato a few times while working, and some of the content on the site is quite cool. I could see potential on assets like that for if I wanted to make a little more on the motion graphics that I make.
Here are some little graphic animations that I've made for a few projects at SAE.

So that concludes my blog post. There is definitely more that I need to research when it comes to making both myself and the projects that I make commercial within my industry. It's also a market that is evolving almost each day, and so I make sure to keep an eye on the market trends as well as taking advice from my lecturers and professionals in the industry. Thank you for reading!!
